For the last month of so I’ve been busily working away on some sculpture. This is my latest effort – The Trickster. A 30cm painted clay effigy that I was inspired to make after stumbling across Belgian sculptor Guillaume Geef’s Le génie du mal online. My version mashes up a popular Tasmanian tourism icon with Geef’s take on the fallen angel, Lucifer, and is modelled after the popular trickster in Japanese mythology the tanuki, which I would often see welcoming custom at the entrance to restaurants, shopping malls and tourist destinations.
