zipangu…

It’s a little late in the day, but a friend of mine brought in the newspaper with an article about a show currently on in Tokyo till the 20th. Zipangu, according to the introductory blurb, brings together 31 contemporary artists each with a unique perspective on Japan, and hopes to see, in a new light, what the much lauded Japanese spirit means. It’s an interesting group, with some of my favorite artists represented; Akira Yamaguchi, Tenmyouya Hisashi and Tomoko Kashiki to name a few, and with a bit of luck, I should be able to go and see it next Monday. Fortunately (for anybody willing to travel), it’s going to be on in Osaka and Kyoto so don’t miss a rare opportunity to see so many contemporary artists in the same place. (image: Masakatsu Sashie)

jesse balmer…

I have been a big fan of Jesse Balmer’s work for a little while now, and this may the 2nd, perhaps even 3rd time I’ve put something up here, cause every time I check out his website I’m see nothing short of genius. Anyway, enough with the gushing; I won’t go into the wierd science sub-conscious subject mater, the gorgeous line work, or the off-the-wall humour, you should just check out his site yourself.

new stuffs…

Just a sketch for future work perhaps. I have really enjoyed the fine pencil work over the last few months, but maybe it’s time to try out some new stuff. In the meantime, enjoy car crush and the vinyl crush.

Ernst Haeckel…

Clicking around on Changethethought again I took a little side track and ended up looking at Wikipedia via Gmunk’s incredible motion graphics work. Anyway, long story short, Ernst Haeckel, German biologist, awesome guy, wrote the hand book on pretty much every biological, evolutionary theory, but also did some pretty fine paintings too. Check them out.

Master of Monsters…

Special effects producer and director, Eiji Tsuburaya was most famous for his work on Godzilla, various SF feature films and as the creator of Ultraman. Recently, a friend of mine gave me the book; Master of Monsters, and I have been learning a bit more about his interesting history and the Japanese film industry in the years following the end of World War II. If your a fan of the original Godzilla or any of the Kaijyu movies of that era, it’s a must read and doesn’t skimp on the details.

what i’m listening too…

In the modern blogging/social networking world tradition of facebook, twitter and all those that mimic with similar purpose and quality of information, I’m announcing “what I am listening to just now”. If you are interested… Just because I was so pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Radiohead today basically giving me free music; and it’s good. Not just the music, but the warm fuzzy feelings it gives me being part of a community I guess. Thank you Radiohead. I didn’t even have to log on.

Das Pop…

Will Sweeney and Susumu Mukai return with another fantastical adventure through time and space. This time for Das Pop: The Game. Enjoy.

Okamoto…

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Taro Okamoto, the National Museum of Modern Art has a collection of his works on display till the 8th of May. There is a good write up on the Japan Times website and here is a link to the museum website for exhibition times. If I get a chance to get down there and see it, I’ll try and do a little write up myself.

Les Lumieres: Miso…

If you are in Melbourne this week, find some time to get down to No-Vacancy in the Atrium, Federation Square and see Miso’s latest solo show; Les Lumieres. For more information, visit the No-Vacancy website or City of Reubens. The show runs till April 17th.

With things winding down a bit now, I found some time to get a few updates up. Check out the drawings and watercolours; some new, some recently displayed, in the WORK section. Cheers.
